Materializing the Intangible – a kinetic sculpture that offers a glimpse at the otherwise invisible information in our lives

The problem

Invisible information has no shape

Environmental and physiological data – air quality, stress, growth – happen around us constantly but stay abstract until a chart puts a number on them. Numbers explain; they rarely make you feel it.

The goal

Give data a body that moves

Design a sculptural object that translates a digital signal into physical transformation and whose two resting states are the ends of a continuum, so change itself becomes the message.

Form

Fiddlehead fern

The sculpture’s resting curl borrows directly from a fiddlehead’s unopened frond and wondrously unfurls as it grows.

Motion

Mimosa pudica

The transition takes cues from the Sensitive Plant’s fold response, with an appropriately dramatic response to an environmental change.

Structure

Fibonacci spiral

The segment proportions closely resemble a Fibonacci spiral, so the curl reads as organic and familiar rather than mechanical.
